Who is responsible for your data
8th Chair operates this site and decides how and why your personal data is processed. You can reach us about anything on this page at eighthchair@gmail.com, and we aim to respond to any request about your data within 30 days.
What we collect, and why
We collect only what the site needs to function. Nothing here is sold, and nothing is shared with advertisers.

What is public
Be aware of this before you take part, because some of it cannot be undone.
- Published credos are permanent and public. They carry your name and the date, they are readable by anyone, and they are intended to be quoted and cited elsewhere, including by search engines and AI systems. Once an issue closes it is final and cannot be edited.
- Your member profile is public once your membership is approved: your name, handle, headline, bio, organisation, and any links you add.
- Votes are public records, individually. Not only the totals. It is possible for anyone to see which member voted for which credo. We treat voting as an act on the record rather than a secret ballot, and this is a deliberate part of how the eighth chair works.
Applications are not public. If your application is not accepted, your application details are visible only to us.
How long we keep it
- Account and profile: until you delete your account.
- Published credos: permanently, as described below.
- Applications: up to 24 months from your last contact with us, then deleted.
- Newsletter address: until you unsubscribe.
- Email delivery records: 12 months.
- Error logs and rate-limit records: error logs up to 90 days; rate-limit records minutes.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from your dashboard, or by emailing us. Deletion removes your profile, your unpublished submissions, and your votes.
Published credos are the exception. They stay as part of the permanent issue record, with your name detached so the credo is no longer linked to you. We do this because an issue is a citable record and removing an answer would falsify it. You should also know the practical limits: your name may persist in copies we do not control, including emails already sent, search engine caches, and anything anyone quoted elsewhere. If you need us to try to reach downstream recipients, ask and we will do what we reasonably can.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to do any of the following, free of charge, by emailing eighthchair@gmail.com:
- Get a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correct anything inaccurate
- Delete your account and data, subject to the published-credo exception above
- Receive your data in a portable, machine-readable file
- Object to, or ask us to restrict, processing we do on a legitimate-interest basis
- Withdraw consent to marketing email at any time, without affecting anything before that
If you are in the UK, EU, or EEA and think we have handled your data badly, you can complain to your national data protection authority. In the UK that is the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Where your data is held
Our database, hosting, and email providers are based in the United States, so your data is transferred there and processed under those providers’ standard data protection terms. If you are in the UK, EU, or EEA, that transfer is a factor you should weigh before applying.
Who else processes it
- Supabase (United States): database, authentication, and file storage
- Vercel (United States): hosting, plus Analytics and Speed Insights
- Resend (United States): sending email
- Google and LinkedIn: sign-in, if you choose to use them
Each processes your data under its own privacy policy and under our instructions.
Cookies
We use cookies only to keep you signed in and, before launch, to remember that you have entered the site password. We do not use advertising cookies and we do not track you across other websites. Our analytics measure page views and loading performance in aggregate and are not used to build a profile of you.
Children
This site is for professionals and is not intended for anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has given us data, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that materially affects you, we will update the date at the top and, where the change is significant, tell members by email.
